🎯 ObjectiveClaim the Most 1x1 Boxes

1. The Objective

The goal of Dots and Boxes is simple: capture more 1x1 square boxes than your opponent. The game begins with an empty grid of dots. Players take turns drawing lines between adjacent dots. Completing the fourth side of a box claims that box and awards you 1 point plus an extra turn.

2. How Turns Work (Step-by-Step)

01

Draw One Line

On your turn, connect two adjacent dots horizontally or vertically. Diagonal lines are not permitted in standard play.

02

Check for Completed Boxes

If the line you drew creates the 4th side of one or two 1x1 boxes, you immediately capture those boxes. Your initials/color will fill the box, and your score increments.

03

Bonus Turns (Chain Captures)

Whenever you complete a box, you must take another turn. If that turn completes another box, you get yet another turn! This allows skilled players to capture long sequences ("chains") in a single turn.

04

Turn Passes

If your line did not complete any box, your turn ends immediately and your opponent takes their move.

4. Key Rules to Remember

  • You cannot pass: When it is your turn, you must draw a line.
  • Bonus moves are mandatory: When you complete a box, you cannot decline the extra turn.
  • Simultaneous boxes: Drawing one central line can complete two boxes at the same time, earning you 2 points!
  • Game End: The match ends the moment all available lines on the grid are filled.

5. Quick Tips for Beginners

⚠️ Don't Give 3rd Sides

The number one rookie mistake is drawing the 3rd side of a box. Doing so lets your opponent immediately claim the box on their next turn.

🎯 Count Available Safe Lines

Early in the game, focus on finding "safe" moves—lines that only leave 1 or 2 sides filled on adjacent boxes.

⚡ Master the Double-Cross

When capturing a chain, giving away the last two boxes can force your opponent to open the next long chain for you. Read our Strategy Guide for details.
